Vittles Food Festival July 2017

It was a foodie kind of weekend and a perfect way to end the month of July. The Vittles Food Festival for this quarter took place on the grounds of the Nubuke Foundation in East Legon from 28th to 30th July. I decided to go check it out with my girls on the Friday, hoping we would be able to meet some new businesses and of course sample their food.

The festival was scheduled to start from 10am and I purposely arrived 2.5 hours later as experience in Ghana has taught me that events never actually start on time. To my disappointment, there was probably only four vendors who had fully set up, with others still organising their stalls and a number of other stalls with no one in sight. I was relieved to see that at least the kid’s corner was set up, and my kids wouldn’t go away disappointed!

I have to commend Wild Cherry, Honeycomb Cafe, Mind Snacks Ghana and Zero & Below who were well and truly set up by the time we got there. Seriously, hats off to you!

The Vittles Food Festival began in 2015 and is the brainchild of Leroy Ankrah. I had the pleasure of meeting Leroy and his wife, Aba, who was helping to run the kid’s corner. The kid’s corner was fantastic and you could tell it was designed by a mum with the various activities planned. My two girls were well and truly entertained!

Bobafro also had a stand at the fair, and they’ve been at a number of fairs that I’ve been to lately. For those that don’t know, bubble tea (also known as boba tea) is in Ghana! Worth a try if you have never tried it before for the experience.

Taste Aroma, was also at the fair and if I had an award for best presented stand, they’d be the winner. Not only did they have an iPad showing videos of how to use their stir fry cooking sauces, but they also provided free samples, had special prices for those purchasing their products and promotional material to give away. Anita, the Managing Director of the company, was present and so lovely to chat with. I enjoyed meeting her and finding out more about their company and products.

Dzifa from Dzi’s Tasty Treats showcased her yummy desserts and homemade jams. I snapped up a jar of her sweet chilli jam which was delicious with the zucchini slice I made. They also had freshly made poffertjes for sale which went down a treat with the girls. They had a variety of toppings that you could choose from but they had me at dulce de leche!

The Farmer’s Market was also there but they didn’t have most of their produce and were still setting up. I sampled their cherry tomatoes and they were so fresh, literally just picked from the vines!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the other days of the show, so I missed their big event on Sunday, the Cacao Show, which was a dessert competition for bakers and chocolatiers. I’m looking forward to attending the next quarter’s festival!

The next Vittles Food Festival is scheduled for November. Follow Vittles on their Facebook or Instagram pages to find out more information.

  2. Wow thanks for the tip for Ghanian time! And I have a serious addiction to good sweet chilli jam. I love it with haloumi too.

I LOVE haloumi, and can’t get a decent one here. I’ve actually found a recipe for one that I’d like to try soon. 🙂
